Welcome to VSP BSL Level 2

Once you have completed Level 1 you may wish to move onto Level 2. If you are interested in BSL Level 2, it is taught in three units.
Unit 201 involves students watching a clip and answering multiple choice questions linked to the clip you watch.
Unit 202 is the productive part of the course, where you tell a 3-5 minutes story and are assessed on your BSL signing skills.
Unit 203 is a two-way conversation between yourself and your tutor.

Course Information

BSL Level 2

This qualification is designed to enable you to develop your BSL to communicate with Deaf people in a range of familiar contexts, participating in more detail.
The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real life and daily experiences. You will become confident of understanding the grammar and structure of BSL. You will be able to deal with more routine language tasks. You will be able to develop this Language even further in conversation.


The course is divided into three units and you must pass all units to gain the Signature qualification.

BSL 201 – develops your receptive skills

This unit covers topics linked to meeting deaf people. You will learn how to receive and understand specific information and instructions, and how to understand descriptions, explanations and statements.

BSL 202 – develops your productive skills

This unit covers topics to help you when signing with a deaf person. You will learn how to use simple structures and phrases and use BSL appropriate to the context of the discussion.

BSL 203 – develops your conversational skills

This unit covers topics to help you converse with a deaf person. You will learn how to understand routine questions and responses, requests and views and understand the main points of routine conversations.
There are four themes which run throughout this qualification:
  • Everyday Conversation
  • Eating and Drinking
  • Shopping and Spending
  • Travel and Holidays
You will study the theme ‘Everyday Conversation’, and two from the remaining three themes.


Assessments take place in normal class time. Also Assessment fees are included in the course price.
Individuals: £640 (including £140 Signature Assessment fees)

Our aim at VSP is to firstly stop the Hearing community feeling uncomfortable with approaching a Deaf person and secondly, for the Deaf community to feel more comfortable in the knowledge that there are work places out there that have Deaf Awareness and Signing too.
